    • 1). License the business car in the name of the business, or the name of the employee who will be using the car. If the vehicle is registered under the employees name, then it will be possible for the employee to deduct expenses used to run the car (such as gas) from his personal taxes. If the vehicle is registered under the business name, the business has the advantage of getting low interest rates when purchasing the car and lower insurance rates.

    • 2). Register the car as any other vehicle in Louisiana. The business has 40 days to register a car from the first time the business takes possession of it if it was purchased within Louisiana. Otherwise, you will be liable to paying penalties and fines to the Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV). You have 30 days to register a vehicle purchased out of state.

    • 3). Get insurance for the vehicle. You should have an insurance policy that has the following liability coverage: $25,000 for property damage, $15,000 per person for bodily injury or death, or $30,000 per accident for bodily injury or death. Some of the insurance carriers in Louisiana include Esurance, Liberty Mutual, Geico and Progressive.

    • 4). Register with Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV). Process your vehicle registration with the OMV. This can be done by physically visiting the office or through mail. The documents that should accompany your vehicle application for registration include a vehicle application form (DPSMV1799), proof of current insurance, manufacturers statement of origin which will be issued by the dealer you bought the car from, notarized and properly assigned title, a federal odometer disclosure statement, proof of sales tax payment, notarized bill of sale (showing the selling price of the vehicle), UCC1 financing statement, current registration (for out of state vehicles). The fee is dependant on the weight, type and selling price of the vehicle. The contacts for OMV is:

      Office of Motor Vehicles

      P.O. Box 64886

      Baton Rouge, LA 70896

    • 5). Get a license plate. Once your application is approved by the OMV, you will get license plates given to you or mailed to you immediately. The fees paid depends on how much you paid for the vehicle and the type of license you want.

    • 6). Keep a copy of the registration documents. Make a copy and keep the registration documents in the office files and another copy in the car at all times.
