How to Select a Bowling Ball

    • 1). Consider how strong you are. Most bowling balls weigh between eight and 16 pounds. For most people, selecting a bowling ball weighing 10 pounds is ideal. Remember that you'll be throwing the bowling ball down the lane as many as 30 times in a game. If you are particularly strong, you may want to go for a 12 or 14 pound ball.

    • 2). Use a heavier ball for the opening shot of a round. This gives you the force you need to knock down as many pins as possible.

    • 3). Select a lighter ball for the second shot of a round, when you are trying to aim the ball at particular pins. Some bowlers select two balls to take with them to the lane for comparison.

    • 4). Put the ball of the right weight on your hand and make sure it fits your fingers properly. Finger holes at bowling alleys are drilled for varying sizes of hands. Make sure there is enough space between the finger and thumb holes on the ball, so your hand rest naturally in them; your hands shouldn't feel jammed. You want a ball that you can use and freely release down the lanes.

    • 5). Look for any cracks or dents on the ball; a few cracks or dents won't going cause too many delivery problems. But if there are large cracks and dents near where you place your hands, the ball might not go where you want when you release it down the lane.
