A Guide to Camping Holidays in Brittany, France
There are almost 1000 campsites in Brittany ranging from a rural farmers field to a luxury 4 star resort. Most campsites have pitches for tents, caravans or motorhomes and some will rent out mobile homes and chalets.
Some campsites are open all year whilst others may only open in the summer months.
All campsites must provide showers, toilets and washing areas but the availability of other facilities will vary from site to site. There are several 'classification' schemes which provide some guidance to the facilities and quality available.
Star rating
The Federation Francaise de Camping et de Caravanning (FFCC) manages the French campsite 'star' system which ranges from one to four stars. The stars reflect the availability of facilities at a site and not the quality of the facilities.
1 star
The site has to have individual shower cabins with at least cold water, a washing area, dish washing sinks and pitches of at least 90 m.
2 star
Same as one star plus individual shower cubicles with hot water, individual washbasins, power points for electric razors and small electrical equipment.
3 stars
Same as two stars plus English speaking warden in attendance 24 hours a day, tiled floors in washing and shower areas, private washing cabins, equipped children's play area, flowers, vegetation between pitches, safe keeping for valuables, food shop on site or in the immediate vicinity and soft drinks available.
4 stars
Same as three stars plus private washing cubicles with hot water, dish washing and clothes washing sinks with hot water, tarred lanes within the site, games room, common room and larger pitches of at least 100m.
Camping Qualite mark
The Camping Qualite mark is awarded to camp sites which provide guarantees of the quality of the site maintenance, privacy and cleanliness. In Brittany there are currently 114 sites which have received the award.
In order to achieve the award mark each site is evaluated against nearly 600 criteria such as;
Information and booking system
Access, the site and the surrounding area
Welcome on arrival
Pitches and amenities
Condition of toilet and washing facilities
Cleanliness of toilet and washing facilities
General cleanliness
Basic leisure activities
Stay on the campsite
Invoicing, organisation, management
As camp sites ranging from one to four stars may be evaluated each campsite is also judged on its added extras;
Grocery stores and shops
Take-away meals
Bar, Restaurant, Self-service
Swimming pool
Events
Rental accommodation
Winter caravaning
Additional services (day nursery, cinema)
Clef Verte
There are also 49 more sites in Brittany which have been awarded a Clef Verte or 'Green Key' mark which is awarded to tourist accommodation which respects the environment.
The award is normally an indication that the camp site has a low density of pitches with plenty of green open spaces.
