    • 1). Find out the requirements of local codes and building regulations for energy-efficient home building. Where requirements of energy efficiency in local codes overlap the Energy Star requirements, they will be followed. Follow the local guidelines if requirements for local codes conflict with or exceed the Energy Star requirements.

    • 2). Determine the climate code for your specific area by comparing your location to the 2004 International Residential Code. This will determine the type of insulation required in your home.

    • 3). Perform a thermal bypass inspection checklist provided by Energy Star. These must be passed to earn the Energy Star Rating.

    • 4). Have a rater certified by RESNET (Residential Energy Services Network) determine that the leakage of energy from the home meets Energy Star requirements.

    • 5). Test and seal the duct system to the technical requirements spelled out by Energy Star in its technical literature for your area.

    • 6). Ensure that all cooling equipment is sized according to the most recent editions of the ACCA (Air Conditioning Contractors of America) Manuals J and S, ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers) 2001 Handbook of Fundamentals for the home.

    • 7). Have all windows inspected for Energy Star requirements.

    • 8). Install appliances that are Energy Star-approved.

    • 9). Have your house inspected by an Energy Star certifier.
