Oldsmobile had a good year in 1979. It had many available models featuring a few, but the quality that people had been expecting from the company since 1897 was still being presented first and foremost. - The 1979 Toronado was largely the same as the previous year, but it did feature notable differences. The interior space, rated to hold four passengers, was increased with a lowering of the rear seat. The rear suspension was redesigned to increase the trunk space. The Toronado also featured a 350-cubic inch, eight-cylinder engine with a three-speed automatic transmission. A diesel version of the Toronado was also available.
- The Cutlass was available in four different versions in 1979: the Calais, Salon, Supreme and Cruiser. The Calais was a two-door coupe and was mostly the same as the Supreme with a few minor details on the trim keeping them separate. They featured Oldsmobile's 350-cubic inch, eight-cylinder engine. The Salon was available with either a 231-cubic inch, six-cylinder or a 260-cubic inch, eight-cylinder engine. The 260-cubic inch model engine could be powered by either gasoline or diesel. The Cruiser was a diesel-powered car with the same 350-cubic inch, eight-cylinder engine as the Calais and the Supreme.
- The Custom Cruiser was a station wagon sporting a 350-cubic inch, eight-cylinder engine in either gas or diesel. The Omega was the only compact offered by Oldsmobile and was available in a two- or four-door or a hatchback version. The Omega featured a 305-cubic inch, eight-cylinder engine. The Delta 88 was billed as a family car and featured 20-cubic feet of trunk space and a 231-cubic inch, six-cylinder engine.
