Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary- An Ultimate Wildlife Experience
The Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary established in the late 1960s is now the second largest sanctuary in Goa. Hidden among its thick foliage and dispersed across its total 86 square kilometres are a diverse collection of wild animals found in India from four legged predators to flying wonders and little scurrying feet hidden deep within the forest bed. With not one but two rivers flowing through it, the Talpona River and the Galijabaga River the Sanctuary with its magnificent flora and fauna is a must visit for all.
The Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary is the second largest of its kind in Goa with extensive forest coverage and a diverse collection of animals. Its dense forests make it difficult to see animals but a trek through the forest is a unique experience.
Situated in the southern part of Goa in Canacona taluka the sanctuary supports three distinctive types of forest cover; moist deciduous forests, semi-evergreen forests and evergreen forests. The forest cover has been designed to mimic the natural habitat of the animals and it is a challenge and requires a lot of patience to see the more exotic residents by the slight rays of light that filter in through the thick canopy above. With the right attitude and right equipment mixed with a lot of luck, you may be able to get a glimpse of a prowling panther or a lazy sloth bear. While other jungle cats such as leopards and jaguars, leopard cats, Indian bison, hyenas, four-horned antelope, flying squirrels, Indian pangolins, Malabar trogons, slender loris and spotted deer are rarely seen, there is an over abundance of frogs, monkeys, snakes and insects in the forest and easily spotted.
Among the snake population are Hump-nosed pit vipers, Malabar pit vipers and golden-back gliding snakes. Others hidden within the dense forest are porcupines, toddy cats, flying lizards, velvet-fronted nuthatches, Malayan bittern and speckled piculets. A bird watcher will not be by the hundreds of blazing plumed birds among which are heart-spotted woodpeckers and white-bellied woodpeckers. The park is best visited during the months of October to December but the lush greenery is at its best during the monsoon months and a feast for the eyes. There also watch towers and a tree house overlooking a water pool for better view of the animals below.
