A research was carried out by Anna Wald, M.D, M.P.H of the University of Washington and Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle which states that, on several occasion individuals who have been diagnosed to have herpes simplex type 2 do not show the symptoms of this disease at all and still end up transmitting the virus to other people. A good number of individuals infected with this disease are not aware they are carrying this virus at the initial stage because not everyone gets to suffer from the symptoms of this condition. This has been attributed to difference in body immune system.

Herpes simplex type 2 is one of the viral diseases with high transmission rate and it is believed to have infected over 536 million people globally with about 23.6 million cases recorded each year. People between the ages of 15 to 49 years suffer most from genital herpes (HSV 2) mainly because they are sexually active. In American 16 percent of adults have genital herpes seropositive and only about 10 to 25 percent of individuals have recognized HSV 2. Majority of this infection is believed to have been contracted from people without any medical history of this virus in the past thou the chances of passing on this disease does not correlate with recognition of medical signs and the symptoms of genital herpes most likely correlates with the activity of this virus on the genital as well as during shedding of this virus.

A 30 day investigation was carried out on 498 people infected with immunocompetent HSV 2-seropositve by Dr. Anna Wald and her groups to compare the rates and pattern of herpes simplex type 2. This condition was detected on 4, 753 of 23, 683 days which represent 20.1% in four hundred individuals suffering from symptomatic genital herpes compared with 519 of 5, 070 days (10.2%) in 88 people suffering from asymptomatic infection. Herpes simplex 2 was found in about 324 persons out of 410 which represent about 83 percent suffering from HSV 2 disease and in about 60 of 88 people infected with asymptomatic HSV 2 infection.

Symptomatic HSV 2 patient suffer more regular shedding than asymptomatic patients. The number of days symptomatic patient gets to experience the symptoms of this disease is put at about 2, 045 of 4, 753 days compared with 85 of 519 days in people suffering from asymptomatic condition. This goes to prove that majority of the time asymptomatic patients sheds the virus is unknown and people who engage in intercourse during this period thinking all is alright will have their fingers bitten.

Armed with this information, herpes simplex type 2 individuals should include anticipatory guidance with regards to the symptoms of this condition and also counseling about how this virus is passed on to others. The major complain from HSV 2 seropositive patient is how to avoid passing on the virus to their partners. Some of the solutions that work well in preventing the transmission of this virus to others are correct usage of condoms, and the intake of antiviral medications.
