Rail Yard Walkway Standards

104 19

    Location

    • Rail yard walkways should be built in areas where employees regularly work or travel by foot on ground level on a daily basis.

    Materials and Surfacing

    • All rail yard walkways should be constructed using materials such as wood planking, concrete, asphalt, or any other non-hazardous material that can provide a reasonably smooth walking surface. The materials used cannot interfere with proper water draining from the track area.

    Situational Construction

    • Each rail yard walkway must be made with the proper width for each employee to safely perform their tasks on a daily basis. Walkways should not have a slope or grade higher than one inch of elevation per eight inches of length. This standard can be surveyed and amended if the geography of the ground makes it impossible to uphold the aforementioned slope standard.

    Maintenance

    • All rail yard walkways are to be clear of standing water, mud, vegetation, debris, or other materials which could cause a safety issue or interfere with an employee's work.

    Lighting

    • Ample lighting should be provided near walkways, and reflective materials should be installed upon them to assist any employees working a night shift.
