Over the years, cell phones have changed their features as well as form factors. We look at the most successful form factors in recent times.

Cell phones have changed a lot since the past few years in all aspects, right from the features to the form factor. When the cell phone was first launched,it was a clumsy candy shaped clunker which put off many people. Today, there are several form factors that you can choose from. We take a look at the famous form factors and which lifestyle it would suit.

Candy:

The candy form factor cell phones are definitely the oldest, and yet are a formidable piece in the market. What makes the candy form factor work is that it is rugged and can be used by almost anybody in a jiffy. Also, with the enhancement in form and design, the candy form factor has had several makeovers and today is as beautiful and elegant as the most stylish form factor in cell phones.

Swivel Form Factor:

The swivel form factor was a short-lived fashion that died along with the Sony Walkman phone. In the swivel form factor, the display and the keypad were joint at a circular moving hinge, which allowed the screen part of the cell phone to make a 180 degrees turn. However, the swivel form factor cell phones from Sony have to be recognized as the ones that gave everyone the assurance that even the most delicate looking form factor is actually rugged and strong and wouldn't break during everyday wear and tear. Who can forget the 'kat kat kat' noise when we unraveled the Sony W580i?

Clam shape Form Factor:

The clam shaped form factor was basically a design where the screen part and the keypad part of the cell phone were joined together at the hinge, and the cell phone could be opened and shut like a door. The clam shape form factor was a great hit with women, with its elegant curves and general circular body. However, Motorola revolutionized the clam shaped cell phone market with their Motorola Razr series, which was supposed to be the slimmest phone in the market in those times.

Push Pull Form Factor:

With emerging technologies and changing times, mobile users wished for a larger screen. Back when touch screen cell phones were still at blueprint level, this gave rise to the push and pull form factor cell phones. Basically, the push pull form factor had the keypad and the display lying on top of each other, and the user had to push the display in a vertical manner to access the keypad.

These are just some of the successful form factors in the mobile market.
