How to Make an Urn Fountain That Flows into Pebbles
- 1). Drill a 1/2-inch diameter hole through the bottom center of the urn, using the appropriate drill bit. For example, if the urn is made from ceramic, use a ceramic drill bit.
- 2). Excavate a section of ground to fit a small hard plastic pond liner where you plan to place the urn fountain. A hard plastic bowl at least 8 inches deep and 12 inches in diameter also works. This pond liner/bowl is the underground reservoir for the urn fountain. Dig the hole so that the pond liner/bowl fits inside with the top rim level with the ground. Sit the reservoir inside the hole. Check to be sure it is level. If not, remove or add dirt as needed to make it level.
- 3). Place a submersible fountain pump inside the reservoir, at the center. Drape the power cord over the top of the reservoir in the direction of the closest exterior electrical outlet. Fit the fountainhead extension onto the pump and extend the rod straight up out of the reservoir.
- 4). Cut a section of hard wire mesh with tin snips to fit over the reservoir and to extend at least 2 inches on the ground around the diameter of the reservoir. One of the center openings in the mesh should fit over the fountainhead. Snip it to make it larger if necessary. If necessary, remove the layer of grass around the diameter of the reservoir so that the mesh lays flat over the reservoir.
- 5). Lay two 3-foot long rebar rods across the center of the wire mesh, to the left of the extended fountainhead. Lay two 3-foot long rebar rods on the right side of the fountainhead, parallel with the first two rods. The rods form the platform for the fountainhead. Check to make sure they are level. Press the ends of the rods into the ground as necessary.
- 6). Dig a 1-inch deep trench from the reservoir to the exterior power outlet. Attach an exterior rated extension cord to the end of the fountain pump power cord, if necessary. Bury the power cord and the extension cord as they run along the ground to the power outlet.
- 7). Fit the hole in the bottom center of the urn over the extended fountainhead. Sit the urn on top of the rebar platform. Cut a 1-inch diameter section of rubber sheeting. Slit the sheeting halfway across the center.
- 8). Spread silicone sealant around the hole in the urn. Fit the slit rubber circle around the fountainhead and press it into the silicone. Spread more silicone over the slit, around the fountainhead and around the outside edges of the rubber disc. Wait 24 hours for the silicone to dry.
- 9). Fill the urn with water. Fill the reservoir with water. Cover the top of the wire mesh and rebar platform with pebbles. Plug in the pump.
