DIY Laquer Guitar Finish
- 1). Remove all hardware and strings from the guitar body. Unscrew the bridge, pick-ups and scratch plate, and pull off the volume and tone dials. Put the pieces and the screws in a safe place.
- 2). Wipe the guitar with a damp cloth and allow to dry naturally so dust and grit does not get caught in the lacquer.
- 3). Apply painter's tape to the fret board to avoid getting lacquer on it.
- 4). Place the guitar on a piece of newspaper and apply a thin layer of aerosol lacquer to the main body and sides. Allow to dry for a few hours and apply another layer of lacquer. Repeat this step two or three times. Numerous thin layers of lacquer work better than one thick layer.
- 5). Lacquer the other side of the guitar the way you did in Step 4. Reattach all the hardware and strings.
