How to Paint a Children's Room
- 1). Talk with your child about the colors she likes, and then go to the home-improvement store to look at color samples. Take these home and look at them in the room in your own lighting.
- 2). Compile an idea book of color combinations, wallpaper borders, decals and murals. Sketch out possible furniture arrangements.
- 3). Buy nontoxic paints. Cans of nontoxic paints are labeled nontoxic, low VOCs or zero VOCs. VOCs are volatile organic compounds.
- 4). Cover all of your furniture and flooring with drop cloths. Prepare the room by sanding any rough spots and filling in holes with a molding compound.
- 5). Wash the walls with plain water and spot clean any soiled areas with your regular cleaner.
- 6). Paint the walls with primer. Use a roller brush to cover most of the areas and a small bristle brush to do the edges. Allow the primer to dry for 24 hours.
- 7). Paint the wall according to your plans. If you are going to do a mural you will want to pencil in the area first and then paint it. Use painter's tape to define where you want borders or other accents to go.
- 8). Allow the paint to dry for 24 hours.
