1927 PGA Championship
Walter Hagen won his fourth consecutive PGA trophy at the 1927 PGA Championship - but it also would prove to be his last.
Hagen defeated Joe Turnesa in the final, 1-up. To reach the final, Hagen scored wins over Jack Farrell, Tony Manero, Tommy Armour and Al Epinosa. Turnesa dispatched Charles McKenna, Willie Klein, Gene Sarazen and Johnny Golden en route to the final.
In the final, Hagen played poorly in the morning 18, shooting 77, but Turnesa only managed to take a 2-up lead.
Turnesa won the first hole of the afternoon 18, moving to 3-up, but Hagen took over from there. Hagen squared the match on the 29th hole, and took a 1-up lead on the 31st hole. Turnesa had several opportunities to win holes after that, but nervous putting did him in.
Turnesa never won a major in his career, but did earn 14 PGA Tour titles. He was one of seven golfing brothers. Mike Turnesa was runner-up at the 1948 PGA Championship. Jim Turnesa lost in the finals at the 1942 PGA Championship, then won the 1952 PGA Championship.
Hagen ended this tournament with a winning streak of 20 straight matches in the PGA Championship. He extended that streak to 22 at the 1929 PGA before losing in the quarterfinals to eventual champion Leo Diegel.
Hagen never won another PGA after this, but he did twin two more majors. This was major victory No. 9 (out of 11 career major titles) for Hagen.
