We use over 100 different herbs in thousands of recipes from all over the world. Most people buy there herb's from the supermarkets, think how much nicer your meals would taste with home grown herbs. They are fairly simple to grow, in the beginning they will need a fair amount of dedication to ensure the seeds or cuttings start to develop correctly but once established they will need minimal care just the odd watering when and as required. Whether you live on the 10th floor of a tower block in the middle of a city centre or you have a house in the country side with acres of land anyone can grow their own herbs.

Most people who live in a flat and don't have access to a garden think that they will not be able to grow there own food but this is not the case, growing herbs (and even some fruit and vegetable plants) can easily be grown indoors on a window sill or in window boxes. When growing your herbs indoors all you require is a container that is easy to move and a little bit of knowledge into the specific herb you wish to produce.

The advantage of having a vegetable garden, big or small, is that you can obviously grow a lot more than you can in a widow sill or in a window box. When growing your herb garden you must be careful of the various weather elements, early and late frost can really affect certain herbs. Also you need to be careful of the temperature a particularly cold summer can affect the growth of your herbs.

The 5 most used herbs in kitchens around the world today are Basil, Chives, Parsley, Rosemary and Thyme. All of these can be grown indoors as well as outdoors. These 5 herbs will add lots of flavour to various dishes as well as add colour and sometimes even a wonderful scent to your garden or window box. Your basil plant will produce either white or lilac flowers, parsley has attractive leaves, some types of rosemary will give you good ground coverage that will make any window box stand and thyme will add not only attractive ground cover to your herb garden on window box but will also add a lovely aroma.
