Do Puppies Grow After Getting Spayed?

All those responsible for the health of canines need to update ones knowledge, and ensure that they are taking appropriate care of the dogs.
Studies show that dogs which were spayed around 7 weeks grew significantly taller when compared to those that got spayed at 7 months.
It was also found that puppies that got neutered or spayed before they turned a year old, grew taller than the ones that got spayed after they turned a year old.
The sex hormones communicate with many other hormones related to growth and promote closure of growth plates during puberty, so bones of bitches and dogs spayed and neutered pre-puberty keep on growing.
Such dogs can be identified easily because of longer limbs, narrow skulls and chests, and light bone structure.
Abnormal and increased growth results in changes in the proportion of the body.
This is due to the length of a particular bone as compared to the other.
For example the femur has grown to its normal length after 8 months, when the dog gets spayed the tibia which generally stops growing after a year or more persistently grows.
With extra growth, the lower leg below the stifle becomes heavier (as it is longer) and could cause stress on the cruciate ligament.
To achieve peak density of bone, sex hormones are important.
These physiological and structural alterations could be reason why dogs spayed at the age of five and a half months were more prone to CCL rupture.
Another study revealed that dogs spayed at five and a half months showed occurrence of hip dysplasia as compared to other dogs that underwent spaying at a later stage.
Dog lovers must take a note of this study and must ponder over whether the pups must go through spaying early or not.
There is difference of opinion on spaying canines before puberty.
How do we overcome the pet overpopulation problem? We have another choice how about performing tubal ligation among female dogs and vasectomy in males? This will not prevent pyometra and mammary cancer and vasectomy cannot prevent unwanted behavior like humping and marking.
Training is the answer to such issues.
So spaying has its own advantages as well as disadvantages.
It is best that we assess every situation differently.
