Breast cancer - The Serial Killer
Recent research shows that 5 to 10 % of all breast cancer cases in the city are in women in their 20s and 30s. On an all India scale though cervical cancer is the most common, in Delhi breast cancer is even more common. The best breast cancer doctor in Delhi is accessible online.
A AIIMs research of patient's profiles conducted in 20001 and 2011 shows that one in ten women with breast cancer were younger than 35 years. 73% of these were between 30 and 35 and 24% were a staggering 25 to 29 years of age. "The most challenging part of treating a young cancer patient is to deal with the side effects of chemotherapy like hair loss, infertility or surgical removal of the affected body part. Now, there are technologies to conserve the breast which is good news," said Dr Geeta Kadyaprath, who is a surgical oncologist at max hospital.
The problem is compounded by the fact that unless the lump is prominent patients don't visit the doctor. Dr VS Deo, additional professor in surgical oncology comments -
"In Delhi, awareness level is higher yet, majority of patients who come to us have reached stages II and III. Women approach doctors only when the lump on the breast is prominent or there is pain. Ideally, one should report to the doctor if there is any hardness or lump on the breast for more than four weeks,"
A breakthrough in breast cancer treatment is targeted therapy. This therapy was started at AIIMs 2 years ago. The benefit is that patients take these medicines at home with little or no side effects.
Aside from AIIMs and a few private hospitals Delhi is not well equipped for the treatment of breast cancer. It is often painful to seek treatment unless you can afford a private facility.
