Definition: An engine starting system generally consisting of mechanical components to convert the kicking motion of the rider into rotational force inside the engine.

Examples:

The unique gear change kick start lever mechanism fitted to some Jawa/CZ motorcycles was relatively easy to operate once the owner had figured it out. The first step was to disengage the gear change (left side change position) from its standard position by depressing it.

The lever would then rotate clockwise and engage in the kick start mechanism.
