During the previous decades, cosmetic plastic surgeries particularly the tummy tuck and breast augmentation usually involved longer recovery period, higher risks of complications, less natural appearance, and higher expenses. But with the introduction of new surgical techniques and equipment and stricter patient selection, most cosmetic procedures nowadays can be performed safer and more accurate.

One of the most notable advancement in plastic surgery can be seen in the field of tummy tuck due to the modification of endoscope which is a small camera attached to a thin tube. With this instrument, it is now possible to perform tummy tuck-a procedure that can address the laxity in abdomen-by simply making small incisions in the area where a doctor can insert an endoscope and sutures to tighten the underlying muscles.

With the advancement in tummy tuck, this procedure has become one of the most common plastic surgeries in the US for the past few years. This is shown by a study conducted in 2008 suggesting that tummy tuck was the fifth most performed invasive surgery in the country, with women accounted for nearly 97 percent of all the procedures.

There is also a significant development in breast augmentation which can also be attributed with endoscope. Today, it is now possible to insert breast implants through a small incision in the navel because of this instrument. Other notable progress in breast enhancement procedure is the introduction of non-surgical breast lift through Botox injection, and breast injection through Macrolane which is a gel-like filler that will augment the bosoms for at least 18 months.

However, Botox injection and Macrolane filler, which are becoming popular in some European countries, are not yet commonly performed in the US. Meanwhile, some experts in breast augmentation believe that more extensive studies should be conducted to determine if these breast enhancement alternatives are safe to patients before these are introduced to the public.

Because of the introduction of less invasive techniques and non-surgical procedures in plastic surgery, many patients have been lured to try cosmetic procedures that involve less or no downtime at all compared to incisional-type surgeries. To show that non-invasive procedures are becoming popular, a team of US researchers conducted a study suggesting that Botox is the most commonly performed cosmetic procedure in 2008 followed by laser resurfacing, chemical peel, and laser hair removal.
