1988 Ford Ranger Fuel Problems
- Auto Beef, an auto consumer complaints website, indicates the shut off switch (inertia switch), which shuts off the fuel pump in the event of accident is faulty. The inertia switch sometimes shuts off the fuel pump during normal condition resulting in the Ranger not starting. Aside from an accident, frequent off-road activity may toggle the inertia switch, causing it to turn off.
- Another source of starting problems is the fuel pump itself. Auto Beef also reports that the Ranger not starting may be due to insufficient power to the fuel pump. One possible culprit may be providing your vehicle with the wrong engine oil. Consulting your owner's manual ensures you are using the correct oil for your engine.
- Before deciding to replace the fuel pump, a mechanic can perform an oil test or pressure reading. If your pressure and engine oil is sufficient, it may be time to replace your fuel pump. Cost for a new fuel pump is approximately $130 for parts (as of January 2011), not including labor.
