How to Read a Silva Compass for Land Navigation
- 1). Look for a landmark along the route that you want to travel. It could be a church spire or large tree. Hold the compass level and point the "Direction of Travel" arrow at the landmark. Find your heading in relation to the landmark by turning the compass dial so that "N" lines up with the red end of the pointer.
- 2). Look at the heading in degrees at the index line.
- 3). Look up and walk toward your landmark. Keep the needle aligned with the "N" and keep sight of the landmark.
- 1). Turn the Silva's dial so that the known heading (in degrees) is set at the index line. Hold the compass level in front of you with the "Direction of Travel" line pointing ahead.
- 2). Move your body so that the red end of the needle aligns with the "N" and you are facing the direction you need to travel.
- 3). Move toward a landmark straight ahead, in line with your heading. Keep moving until you get to where you wanted to go.
