Nutrition Common Sense - Do"s and Don"ts
For years now in public lectures, I have stated that the government considers ketchup as a vegetable in the school lunch program.
People always laugh in disbelief! But it is true and now the makers of junk foods are jumping on the government's lack of oversight.
By now you have seen commercials for canned pasta and sauce and fruit juice drinks that claim they contain a full serving of fruits or vegetables.
Oh please! The sauce (ketchup) is considered a vegetable? And the pasteurized, sanitized, empty calories called 'fruit juice' are equal to eating fruit? Get real! It has no fiber and most of the nutrients are totally cooked out or processed out.
Drinking apple juice is not even close to eating an apple.
It is totally incomprehensible that the government even allows this nonsense.
I don't want food police and more regulations.
We don't need this - what we need is just a good dose of common sense! Americans are over-fed and under-nourished.
Maybe the lack of nutrition leaves us so low in brain function that we believe that "cola adds life" or that a burger establishment is really the best place to bond with our children.
Canned pasta, fruit juice and other junk food on occasion won't wreck a persons' health.
But please - don't fall for the incredible lie that it's healthy because a commercial tells us that it is.
You know it's a lie - so don't fall for it.
Also, just because something is sold in a "natural food store" or Whole Foods, don't assume it's healthy.
There are some items in those type of stores that I wouldn't think about eating.
Some general rules to follow:
The decisions you make on what to eat is the single most important decision you make that will determine your level of health.
Eating real food takes effort.
You have to chew an apple, not just drink apple juice.
You have to prepare vegetables, cook them, eat them and clean up to have a healthy diet.
No short cuts! Move Well - Eat Well - Think Well

Some general rules to follow:
- If it is in a package - be suspicious.
- If it claims to be healthy - be really suspicious.
- If a food item says it is low fat, low or no sugar, cholesterol free or any health claim - be careful.
- If it takes only a few minutes to heat up in a microwave for a complete meal, understand that it may not kill you; but it sure isn't healthy.
