Debt Settlement and Credit Counseling Comparison
It has not always been this way, though.
In the past, many consumers were handcuffed and they did not have the power to operate in the way today's consumers can operate.
Instead, these individuals had to pay off debt the way the creditors told them to, which tended to be the slow, hard way.
If you are in debt, then you should know at least a little bit about credit counseling and debt settlement.
These two options have some important differences, but they are both worth looking at.
With credit counseling, you are looking at a full, comprehensive program that can include things like debt consolidation.
The first part of counseling is that you will sit down with a person who will walk you through the process.
That person will let you know some of the options that you have available and he will allow you to see the way out of debt.
For folks who are currently having trouble coming up with solutions on their own, this makes a lot of sense.
Just having that extra voice and the extra pair of eyes can make all the difference, especially in the beginning.
Settlement also helps you get out of debt as a consumer, but it does this in a completely different way.
You are similarly working with a debt relief company that is going to look at your situation.
When settling, they take action for you, though.
They get in touch with the credit card companies and other creditors that have been holding you back.
They let these companies know that you are willing to offer a small percentage of your total debt right up front if that means that you will be free from commitment in the future.
This is a nice way to end things with creditors right now, instead of waiting and dragging the process out.
These two things make a lot of sense for a lot of people.
At the least, they make more sense than what the credit card companies want you to do.
The words "minimum payment" should read "in debt forever", because you can never get out of debt if that is your strategy.
Try something different and either of these is a really nice place to start.
Just make sure you are dealing with a well know company.
