    • 1). Talk to the labor department of your state and your union representative when relevant to learn more about applying for unemployment benefits during the lockout. Different states have different rules about such proceedings and how to apply.

    • 2). Decide on a method to file your claim. Some labor departments will allow you to file online through their website or by telephone. For more personal assistance, visit the department in person to file your claim.

    • 3). Get your information ready. When you file, you will likely need to have ready your social security number and date of birth, your mailing address, telephone number, the last day you worked before the lockout, your employer's address and information for your dependents, including full legal names, social security numbers and dates of birth. You might also need the EIN (Employer Identification Number) for your company or your driver's license number.

    • 4). Write down any information you receive once you've filed, such as a PIN (Personal Identification Number) or a confirmation number you are provided. You might need such reference numbers for future correspondence regarding your unemployment benefit insurance. Once you're approved, you should start receiving benefits.
