How to File for Property Tax Reduction
- 1). Contact your local county tax collector's office. Ask them how they compute property taxes. Inquire about the length of time between assessments and the process to appeal the current assessment. Finally, request an interview if applicable.
- 2). Obtain an appraisal and research comparable homes that have sold in the area. The goal is to prove that the current market value of the home is below the latest assessment. A real estate agent can provide you with a listing or you can do the research yourself.
- 3). Take pictures of different value-reducing things in the area. These include drainage, freeways, heavy traffic, railroads or heavy industry.
- 4). Go to your appointment and/or follow the appeal process. Be sure to document everything and come well prepared to explain your case.
