Native American Scholarships in Texas
- Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, offers 13 scholarships for Native American students who attend that school. Many of the scholarships are general scholarships and open to all Native American students while others require students to pursue certain majors and degrees. For example, the Native American Seminary Award goes to a Native American student enrolled in a seminary program. Scholarships award varying amounts of tuition assistance, ranging from the $500 Marion T. Burr Scholarship for Native American members of an American Baptist Church to the $30,000 Judith L. Weidman Racial Ethnic Minority Fellowship for graduate communication students.
- At the University of Houston, Native American students qualify for three Native American-specific scholarships, as well as several scholarships open to any minorities. The American Indian Science and Engineering Society sponsors scholarships for both graduating high school seniors and current college students pursuing degrees in engineering, mathematics, science, medicine or natural resources. Other Native American organizations offering scholarships to University of Houston students include the Association on American Indian Affairs and Catching the Dream.
- The Texas Archaeological Society sponsors a scholarship program that allows Native American students to attend the Texas Archaeological Society Field School, located near Hondo, Texas. While at the Field School, students take part in a real archaeological excavation and learn about surveying, laboratory processing and archaeological techniques from professional archaeologists. Scholarships cover the costs of the week-long field school, including lodging, registration, materials and some transportation costs. - Native American students enrolled in the mechanical engineering graduate program at Texas A&M University can apply for one of eight fellowships and assistantships. When the program was started, minority and female students made up 23 percent of the student population in engineering programs. The program and fellowships were created to bring in more minority and female students to an already highly diverse engineering program. Scholarship amounts range from $8,000 to $30,000 a year and some of the scholarships also include paid travel, paid health insurance and other salary stipends.
