Ceremonial Readings and Quotes for the Oathing Ceremony

  • "The Wise Woman's Stone"

A wise woman was traveling in the mountains when she discovered a precious stone in a stream. The next day, she met a hungry traveler. When she opened her bag to share her food, the traveler saw the precious stone and asked if he could have it for he knew it would bring him great fortune for the rest of his days. Without hesitation, the woman gave it to him.

The traveler left rejoicing in his good fortune but returned to the stream just a few days later searching for the woman. Returning the stone, he said, "I know how valuable the stone is, but I give it back to you hoping that you can give me something much more precious -- that which is within you that enabled you to give me the stone."

    - Adapted from "Chicken Soup for the Woman's Soul"

  • A Living Stone and a Holy People

So put away all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander. Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good. As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house.

For it stands in Scripture: Behold, I am laying in Zion a cornerstone, and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame. So the honor is for you who believe, but for those who do not believe. The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone and a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense. They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do. But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

    - 1 Peter 2:2-10 (ESV)

  • "You build on failure. You use it as a stepping stone. Close the door on the past. You don't try to forget the mistakes, but you don't dwell on them. You don't let it have any of your energy, or any of your time, or any of your space." - Johnny Cash
