The nose is an important, but overlooked, part of the human anatomy.
It combines a complicated system of narrow passages and air filled spaces, so you can process all those delicious smells and inhale the oxygen.
These passages, also known as sinuses, also give that distinct resonance to your voice, lessens your skull's weight and gives you better balance.
However, when those same passages become inflamed or irritated, due to allergies, smoke, pollution or a viral infection, like a cold or the flu, the nose secretes more mucus, than required.
They also become swollen, so the normal flow of air and mucus is blocked, causing more bacteria to proliferate.
When this happens, symptoms, like a clogged or runny nose, headaches or having difficulty breathing, appear.
You should not take these symptoms lightly as a sinus headache is known to be debilitating.
So, do not let a sinus attack get the upper hand.
Be aware of what you can do to minimize the symptoms or prevent sinusitis.
* Be mindful of your health.
Despite every precaution you take, still you will be exposed to viruses, from a random sneezing passenger on the bus, a visiting relative or from a friend.
However, a healthy body goes a long way in boosting your defenses and protecting you from viruses.
It will also minimize the risk that you will catch a cold or the flu and even, if you do come down with a virus, the symptoms will be easier to manage.
Boost your body's immune system by having a healthy diet, exercising and avoiding stress.
* Be mindful of your environment and try to keep it sanitary.
This does not mean that you have to go around wearing a surgical mask all the time, but a few common changes can go a long way in preventing a sinus attack.
For example, wash your hands, move away from a coughing or sneezing passenger or do not use the eating utensil of someone sick with the flu.

Unknown to most of us, keeping ourselves hydrated is actually considered as a simple sinus home remedy.
So, make sure that you drink at least eight tall glasses of water daily.
One good way of ensuring that you hit that number is to fill a tall bottle with water and keep it near you.
* Keep the air clean.
Pollutants in the air are one of the main causes of a sinusitis attack.
You can protect yourself by staying indoors when the quality of the air is poor or avoid standing close to someone who is smoking.
Of course, it goes without saying that you should also stop smoking.
* Learn how to control your allergies.
An allergy attack is often a precursor to sinusitis.
So, knowing what triggers your allergies is a big help.
You should also see a doctor specializing in allergies and ask about treatments that can help your body develop immunity to your triggers.
Having sinusitis can be problematic, but with the right attitude and treatment, a person can learn to control and deal with it.
There are also several home remedies that one can use to make life easier, but before you use any type of sinus treatment, make sure you have consulted your doctor.
