Correct Heart Defects With the Amplatzer Septal Occluder

The Amplatzer Septal Occluder is a new device being used to correct heart defects causing a hole in the heart between the two upper chambers.
This device is a safe and effective way to cover the hole and encourage the body to repair this defect itself.
Made up of two small discs and a middle piece referred to as a "waist", the Amplatzer Septal Occluder is made out of Nitinol wire mesh that is made out of an alloy consisting of titanium and nickel.
The device is inserted into the body through a catheter that is inserted through an incision in the groin area.
From there, the device is moved through blood vessels until it reaches the heart.
An x-ray and echocardiogram are used to ensure proper placement of the device; once in the proper position, a disc is lengthened on either side, allowing the device to successfully block the hole.
A special polyester fabric is used as an insert to create the foundation for the body to re-grow tissue to effectively seal off the hole in the heart on its own.
Once the new tissue has grown over the device, the wire mesh becomes part of the wall of the heart.
For people suffering from multiple holes in their heart, the Amplatzer Multi-Fenestrated Septal Occluder has been introduced to help seal up the holes in the same way the Amplatzer Septal Occluder does.
If you are suffering from a hole in your heart, contact your doctor today to learn more about the Amplatzer Septal Occluder - it is an easy, non-surgical way to seal the hole and allow your body to heal itself.
