Where Does Social Media Fit Into Information Marketing?

103 10
This might come as a shock but social media is huge, and it's everywhere.
Everywhere you look, you find sayings of 'Like us on Facebook' or 'Follow us on Twitter'.
You hear about how Google+ is the new kid on the block and potentially can be the NBT, which is known as the Next Big Thing (which is what's happening at the time of this writing).
I mean, seriously.
Who doesn't get bombarded with references to social media platforms, especially if you're in the Internet marketing industry? It's just nuts.
So, a good question to look deeper into is how social media fits into the information marketing industry? More importantly, does it actually produce real, tangible results that you can bank on? My answer is...
not really.
Let me explain why.
When I look at how I use social media and how other Internet marketers use it, I don't see it as being a constant flow of qualified traffic that you can count on.
Now before you get all 'up in arms' and think I'm crazy or that I don't have any idea what I'm talking about, let me clear up a few things first.
1.
People do get leads and people do make sales from social media, but the leads and sales aren't consistent day in and day out.
2.
Some of the top Internet gurus use social media for their big product launches, but their main method is what I describe in point #3.
3.
Facebook pay per click is NOT social media...
it's pay per click.
The same goes for YouTube PPC, LinkedIn PPC and Twitter PPC.
4.
Getting followers or likes does not translate into quantifiable sales.
It's a sign of how big or how popular your business or brand is.
Here's what I believe social media is best for...
building an online community and building relationships with that community.
That's it.
In the information marketing industry, social media is really just a vehicle to stay in touch with your online community and to engage with them.
Where the real money is made in information marketing is through email marketing.
Ask yourself this.
How many products have you bought from people you follow because of the Facebook post they put out? How many items have you purchased from a tweet? I bet the answer is very few, if not at all.
On the other hand, how many times have you liked or commented on a Facebook post from someone you follow who shared an inspirational quote or something revealing about their personal life? I bet quite a few.
You see, there is definitely a place for social media in your business.
There really is.
It's a powerful strategy that can't be ignored.
My whole point to this email was to say that if you're whole strategy of driving traffic is just to use social media, I would highly re-think your strategy.
Social media has it's place, but it's a complimentary piece to driving traffic, not a main strategy.
Also remember, as this is very important...
What you put out online can ruin your reputation.
You can build up an image of a trust worthy respectable marketer and lose all credibility in one day with one bad post...
and the information you put online is there forever!
