How to Get Licensed for Property and Casualty Insurance
- 1). Take an approved state property and casualty course. Visit the National Association of Professional Insurance Agents' Education page to find approved online courses, which you can also take in a classroom setting. The courses are set up to teach you the important aspects of the job including ethical sales topics and will allow you to sell auto and homeowners insurance in your state. All insurance salesmen are required to pass a licensing test to work for an insurance company in the sales department.
- 2). Review free sample questions at websites like testprepreview.com. You can look at sample questions to see the format of the test, which will give you a better idea of what to expect when you go in to take the test. The sample questions can be found free online but are not the same ones you will see on the test and you may only be limited to a few per website.
- 3). Register for online quizzes and guides for the exam. You can take sample tests online at Pearson VUE, American Investment Training or 180licensing.com and each hosts hundreds of relevant questions that you can take and be scored on from past tests. Although the questions may be similar, these sample questions are not the exact same as you will see on your exam. By registering for sample quizzes, you may also get hints on how to take the test to succeed.
- 4). Register with your state to take the licensing exam (you must have taken the approved course to do so). At their website, fill out the online application thoroughly including the necessary personal information for your background check. They will then verify the information and approve or reject your application.
- 5). Take the exam. The test will be administered by computer in a similar format as the sample quizzes you have taken. Read carefully and answer with the best possible answer of the choices. Skip questions you are not sure of and return to them at the end. You usually need a 70 percent top pass in most states. Your score will be given to you that day and, if you pass, your license will most likely be completed shortly after that, possibly the same day.
