The pyramid recommends daily whole grains (bread, rice or pasta), generous servings of vegetables (focus on dark green and orange colors), fruit (fresh or frozen), fat-free or low-fat milk (lactose-free if you are intolerant), lean meats and poultry (baked, broiled or grilled), and generous servings of fish, beans and nuts.

    Tips

    • According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, there are things that can help you on your way to a healthier diet. Try to make at least half the grains you consume whole grains, vary your vegetables, eat calcium-rich foods, eat lean protein, find a balance between diet and exercise, and keep your food fresh so it's healthy and safe to eat.

    • Exercise plays an important role in good health, as well as good nutrition. It is important to incorporate exercise into your daily routine. Walking, running, weight lifting or swimming for at least 30 minutes a day will benefit your body. Exercise reduces stress and can help control body weight and blood pressure.
