    • 1). Check the power cord on the air conditioner and make sure it is plugged firmly into a power outlet if the unit is not turning on. Replace or reset the circuit breaker or fuse as necessary.

    • 2). Turn the air conditioner's main power switch on or use the remote control, if applicable, if there is power to the unit but it is not running. Adjust the thermostat to a colder temperature and close windows and doors to help keep the cool air inside. Change the batteries in the remote control if necessary.

    • 3). Disconnect power to the air conditioner if it is running and stops suddenly, as the motor may be overloaded. Reduce the number of appliances running on the same outlet and wait several minutes before restoring power to the air conditioner.

    • 4). Turn the power to the air conditioner off if the outside temperature is less than 60 degrees Fahrenheit, because the unit may not work properly in cold weather.

    • 5). Turn off and disconnect the air conditioner if the cooling is not as expected from the unit. Open the air intake grille on the front of the air conditioner and remove the old air filter(s). Slide new filter(s) inside the unit and close the intake grille. If the air filter is marked "Permanent" on the side, vacuum the filter with a vacuum cleaner attachment on low speed and wash it with lukewarm water and a few drops of dishwashing liquid. Rinse well and set it on a towel to air dry before placing the filter back into the air conditioner.

    • 6). Wipe the air conditioner grille and vents with a clean, dry cloth if there is excessive dirt or dust or the air flow is obstructed.
