    • 1). Pull out the appropriate fuse or trip the appropriate circuit breaker in the fuse box to discontinue power to the 220-volt electric wires that are in a wall space behind a wall plate. Place the fuse away or tape the fuse box door closed with strips of duct tape so it will be left undisturbed.

    • 2). Unscrew the wall plate that is covering the hole in which the 220-volt electric wires reside -- use a Phillips screwdriver to do this. If there are no screws, insert the edge of a putty knife beneath one side of the wall plate and run it up the side. Repeat this on the other side of the wall plate prior to pulling the plate off the wall.

    • 3). Place the receptacle box on the wall over the hole in which the 220-volt electric lines can now be seen. Trace an outline of the outside of the box on the wall with a pencil. Remove the box. Cut out the outline with a wall saw. Dispose of the cut-out piece of wall.

    • 4). Punch out the cut-out plate in the back of the receptacle box with your fingers. Dispose of the cut-out piece of metal. Loosen the screws on the receptacle box with a Phillips screwdriver. Run the 220-volt electric wires that are lying outside of a hole in the wall through the cut-out in the 220-volt receptacle box

    • 5). Insert the receptacle box into the cut-out in the wall. Screw wood screws through the holes in the tabs on the top and bottom of the receptacle box with a Phillips screwdriver.

    • 6). Strip an inch of insulation from each of the four wires that are now in the receptacle box with wire strippers -- you can skip this step if the ends of the wires are already stripped.

    • 7). Loosen the screws on the tabs that are on the back of the 220-volt socket faceplate with the Phillips screwdriver. Wind the exposed end of the black wire around the screw that is on the tab on the left and the exposed end of the red wire around the screw that is on the tab on the right. Wind the exposed end of the green wire around the screw that is on the tab at the bottom, which is bent inward, and the exposed end of the white wire around the screw on the tab directly across from the bent tab. Tighten the screws.

    • 8). Place the faceplate on the box and screw it on with metal screws using the Phillips screwdriver. A 220-volt plug can now be inserted into the socket on the wall, once power has been turned on from the fuse box.
