Sprigging

Definition:

Sprigging (noun) is a type of decorative technique in which small clay balls, coils, or slabs are attached to a piece, generally using the score and slip technique. The verb form is "to sprig".

Sprigging Tips:
  • Fine clays and preformed sprigging pieces can be attached with water (although I still recommend slurry).
  • Coarser clays and heavier sprigs do much better being attached with slip or slurry.

  • Best practice is to use the same clay body for both the pottery and the sprigging. This ensures the rate of shrinkage will be the same. (Especially with light-colored clay, it is fairly easy to wedge in colorant.)
  • If sprigging is lifted off the piece, such as the flowers in the example photo, dry the entire piece very slowly.
