Don"t Let The Bad Guy Know What You"re About To Do

There are some self defense instructors that advise you to alert the bad guy before you take a defensive action.
They recommend saying something like, "Stop! I have pepper spray and if you don't stop, I will use it.
" This is to be said while extending your arm and showing your assailant that you mean business and are not just bluffing.
DON'T DO IT! Do NOT warn your attacker.
Don't tell him what you are going to do to defend yourself.
The assailant will take a warning as a sign that you are actually not ready to defend yourself.
They use the element of surprise to throw you off balance physically and mentally.
You need to fight back the same way.
Take into consideration Jessie's story.
Jessie is a 26 year old woman and mother of three small children.
Shopping for groceries with them is a greater challenge than she is willing to take on, so she waits for her husband to get home from work.
She enjoys having some time alone to shop after being home with her children all day.
The only problem with this arrangement is that she is out late at night by herself.
But Jessie bought some pepper spray to keep on her keychain.
To make her feel empowered but still stylish she bought a sparkly pink rhinestone covered pepper spray.
One Friday night, she went to her local super store just like she always did.
She had never had a problem before, but this time was different.
When she left the store and began walking to her car a man approached her and asked her if she wanted to buy some DVDs.
He didn't seem too threatening, but she tightened her grip around her pretty pepper spray.
Jessie told him no and tried to walk away from him.
The man followed her and asked her if she wanted to perform a sexual act on him.
Instead of spraying him with her pepper spray, she told him to leave or she would spray him.
She flashed her pepper spray so he would know she was prepared to defend herself.
Instead, the man knocked the keychain out of Jessie's hands and tried to grab her.
Thankfully, Jessie's story ends well.
She managed to get away from her attacker long enough to grab her keychain and was able to spray him.
It did what it was designed to do.
She could hear the thug coughing, cussing and spitting as he ran off.
Jessie jumped in her car and drove home, shaken but safe.
This could have ended much differently.
If her attacker had been able to get a hold of her, she would have wound up a victim.
The moral of the story is "Never Let The Bad Guy Know What's Coming" If you are faced with a potential assailant and need to defend yourself, then just do it.
They don't ask your permission to attack you.
You don't need theirs.
Stay safe!
