After seeing Ray, I gained admiration for both Ray Charles, and Jamie Foxx.
Foxx, for playing the role brilliantly.
And Charles, for facing adversities and darkness every day of his life, and making it through the struggles.
This character analysis is written based on Ray Charles as seen in the movie.
The truth is, no one can begin to comprehend what it is like to be in the shoes of Ray Charles.
To face pitch-black darkness every day, while the light of fame shines brightly on the outside.
Strength and willpower were 2 traits that Charles developed over time, but it cost him dearly.
As seen in the movie, Ray Charles was not a perfect man.
In his childhood, he was a completely normal child, who liked to run around outside with his brother.
It all changed when his brother died in an accident, while under Ray's watch.
This scarred Ray, and built his emotional strength for the challenges he would face in the future.
When leaving his mom to go the a blind school, she tells Ray "Don't let anybody make you a cripple, always stand on your own 2 feet!" While she says this, the camera zooms in to his mom hugging and lifting him off of the ground, while his 2 feet are seen high in the air.
This is foreshadowing for the challenges he would face in the future, and his battle with drug addiction.
Playing music in Georgia, spectators could easily spot the musical talent of Ray Charles Robinson.
He eventually started playing for money, and unfortunately because of his blindness, his manager took advantage and paid him less than what was promised.
Ray eventually found out, and developed a habit of asking for $1 bills, to prevent being tricked in the future.
Ray Charles was also extremely smart, and quick to realize when someone was trying to take advantage of him.
To paraphrase his words: "I'm blind, not dumb".
As Ray Charles Robinson climbed the ladder of success, his problems grew.
"More money, more problems", as the saying goes.
He had a wife, 2 kids, and he had developed an addiction to heroin.
His music kept getting more popular, and his fan-base kept growing.
Ray's addiction kept getting stronger, and began to affect his personal life.
It was when he truly realized that he was not being a good father, or a good husband, that he decided to go to Rehab to fight the addiction.
Ray Charles found all of the emotional strength he needed to quit heroin, and never do it again.
A true inspiration for anyone who has dealt with a drug addiction.
Ray Charles was a fighter, and there will never be anyone quite like him.
He fought racial segregation, blindness, and drugs, and came out the winner in every battle.
He did not use his physical condition as a grudge, and succeeded more than anyone could imagine.
One of the most inspirational people of our time, Ray Charles Robinson overcame many pitfalls of life on his journey to becoming one of the most influential musicians of all time.
