How We Chose Godparents For Molly
It's a girl! The words I had been waiting to hear for 41 years.
Molly was truly a blessing and brought so much joy to our entire family.
In addition to a mother and father that adored her, she had an older brother, two grandmothers, one grandfather, four aunts, four uncles, seven cousins and countless honorary aunts and uncles.
Such a lucky little girl with so many people that love her and will be a part of her life - how do we choose only one Godmother and one Godfather? We met with the priest, picked the day, chose the gown, reserved the hall, hired the caterer notified the guests and discussed the merit of each member of our family.
There was no easy choice, too many good options to choose from.
We discussed what we wanted in Godparents, for me it was important they had strong religious beliefs and were active in the church, for my husband it was important it was a family member.
What we did not need the Godparents to be were her guardians in case something happened to us.
We both had family that fit the bill but did want to leave anyone out.
How do we select from the people closest to us? Then it hit us - this is not about us, it is about Molly.
We started thinking about who would be a good role model for Molly.
Who could she relate to? Look up to? Should we look to someone in Molly's generation and not ours? When we did that it became a bit easier.
We had only a few that were old enough to be Godparents and of those choices we looked at the two most active in the church and then it became clear - Tom and Charlotte.
Two exceptional role models, good students, active in the church, representative of each side of our family and Molly's generation.
We made the calls and they were both thrilled to be asked.
We did need to do a bit of explaining to the family, but in general the response was very positive.
The family loved that we were passing the torch to the next generation - this way were not choosing one of our siblings over another.
They were a great choice and most importantly they loved Molly and would take the role of Godparent on with joy and commitment.
It was a beautiful June day, and thankfully our angel slept through the whole ceremony.
Molly was surrounded by family and friends.
Charlotte held Molly during the entire ceremony, Tom lit the candles as instructed by the priest, and they both committed to being a part of Molly's life and religious journey.
Choosing Godparents was not easy but for us it came down to what we wanted for Molly.
We continue to be very happy with our choice and know the two people we chose will always set a positive example for our baby girl.
