It is very difficult to know whether we are taking sufficient omega 3 through foods rich in omega 3, unless we take a pill. I hate taking pills, but now a days I take them to help ward off diseases as I get older. I also have the normal aches and pains. I don't want to not be able to do things I therefore take omega 3 plus some other vitamins.

You can attempt to get an adequate amount of omega 3 through diet. If so, you should go in for the foods that are loaded with monounsaturated fats and omega 3 fatty acids. You must also watch out and keep the consumption of omega 6 within limits. Omega 6 fatty acids are the polyunsaturated fats. Keeping the monounsaturated fats and the omega 3 fats high and at the same time keeping the omega 6 fatty acids low will help you keep your fatty acids in balance which is difficult to do with the American diet.

First of all you need to add fish to your diet, if you are really interested in "Omega 3". Fish is the best source of omega 3, but may also be a bit risky. You need to consume cold water oily fish such as salmon, tuna, and halibut. The only risk of consuming fish in excess is the pollution that the fish may pass on due to living in polluted waters. They may contain mercury, and other poisons that could cause adverse reactions to us when we consume them. You can also get omega 3 from shellfish and some types of eggs such as sardines.

You can get omega 3 from some plant life. The omega 3 fatty acids from plants are known as alpha-linolenic acids or ALA. Some plants that can provide you with omega 3 are seeds such as flax seed oil, sunflower oil, canola, olive oil, corn oil, and soybean oil. You can also obtain omega 3 from English walnuts. In the above mentioned list, flax seed oil has been found to contain the most omega 3. The benefits from canola oil, soybean oil and English walnuts are not that promising.

The recommended dosage of omega 3 a day is 3 grams. You can also get flax seed oil in the form of gel tabs of 1 gram each. They should be taken 3 times a day preferably along with food. You should be aware of the risks involved with taking omega 3 due to some pre-existent health conditions. Omega 3 thins your blood. If you are currently on drugs to thin your blood, then taking omega 3 may not be good for you. Be sure to consult your doctor first if you are taking any other medications.

If you want to ward off diseases that you see the elderly suffering from, then taking omega 3 is exactly what you need. Are you ready to take a risk of catching heart disease, Alzheimer's, arthritis, asthma, allergies, or any other disease that omega 3 could help prevent.

Find the right type of omega 3 for you. If you prefer the one tablet a day out there, then look for the ad on it. That would be so much easier than remembering to take a pill thrice a day.
