How to Repair Scratched Granite
- 1). Determine if the imperfection is actually a scratch. Examine the granite in the sunlight to see if there are multiple scratches or divots throughout the stone. If you see multiple imperfections, the granite may just require routine maintenance. Seal and polish the stone to help fill it in.
- 2). If sealer does not fill in the area, use a dry 0000 steel wool pad to lightly buff the surface. Use a circular motion and light pressure to buff over the scratch and around the immediate area.
- 3). Clean the granite with granite cleaner to remove any of the residue left from the steel wool. Allow the granite to dry for at least 10 minutes.
- 4). Polish the granite with a granite polish. Buff off the polish with a soft cloth; polishing the granite will allow the homeowner to see exactly how the granite will look.
- 5). Use a furniture pen to fill in the scratch. Since many granite colors are multi-hued, use multiple pen colors to create a custom color.
- 6). Lightly pat the area with a cloth dipped in denatured alcohol to remove any excess ink. Remove leftover residue with a soft cloth.
- 7). Clean all of the granite--not just the scratched area--with granite cleaner. Allow to dry overnight.
- 8). Seal all of the granite. This will ensure that the area that was exposed to the steel wool and the rest of the granite slab is uniform.
