How to Apply Wood Putty

    • 1). Purchase a putty knife from a local home-improvement store, if you do not already have one. A putty knife is a thin, flat metal knife with a rounded end instead of a sharp end.

    • 2). Dip your putty knife into the container of wood putty and get some of the putty on the end of the knife. Only get enough on the knife to fill the hole. If you get too much, you will end up having to clean up the area around the hole because of the excess putty on the surface.

    • 3). Spread the wood putty into the area you need to fill. It should spread easily. Apply pressure with the back of the putty knife to push the putty down into the area.

    • 4). Fill the area with putty so that the putty is slightly higher than the surface. The putty shrinks as it dries, and if you do not apply enough extra putty, it will shrink too low and you will have to apply more.

    • 5). Leave the putty to dry according to the instructions on the package. Different brands and types of wood putty have different drying times.

    • 6). Sand down any excess putty once it is dry so that you have a level surface.
