What is the Health Coverage Tax Credit?
- The HCTC is available to individuals who receive a Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation pension, a Trade Readjustment Allowance or a wage subsidy through the Reemployment Trade Adjustment Assistance program. A participant must be part of a qualified health program. Some programs require a participant to meet set age requirements.
- Types of health plans qualified under the HCTC are Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA) plans, state-qualified health insurance, group plans through a spouse's job or individual health plans.
- A participant can receive his HCTC monthly or get an annual credit when he pays his federal income taxes. Eligibility is determined on a monthly basis.
- For an individual using the monthly program, the payment is sent to the U.S. Treasury HCTC program. Payments by check or credit card are accepted.
