Definition:

The fighting top was a platform located at the top end of the lower masts on a sailing warship. In battle, this position was manned by marines or sailors with rifles and muskets. From the fighting tops, these men would fire down on the decks of enemy vessels. The fighting top should not be confused with the masthead or "crow's nest" located at the very top of a mast structure.
