The Bandits' Roost was a small alley off Mulberry Street in lower Manhattan. In this photo, which may have been taken by an associate of Riis, a few local characters stood in the alley, giving off an air of menace.

Riis wrote often of alleys, noting that they were often the meeting places of gangs.
