Choosing the Right Bed and Breakfast

No matter where you are traveling, bed and breakfasts usually provide the perfect setting to spend a lovely evening away from home. While some of these beautiful accommodations are smaller, homey residences; others are remodeled mansions that provide the perfect marriage between beauty and modern efficiency. Because people have varying tastes, not every bed and breakfast is suited to each individual. Before you make a reservation, learn what to expect, so you won't be disappointed.

For older visitors

Typically, older visitors appreciate bed and breakfasts that honor the past by accentuating the era in which they were built. Many of these accommodations have been restored to the way they were original designed, with most boasting spacious brick fireplaces, beautiful woodwork and other designs from eras gone by. While this type of atmosphere is quite appealing to some visitors; it can put certain people off. Before you make a reservation, ask lots of questions over the phone and see if the accommodation has a website with pictures that will help you assess its atmosphere.

For younger visitors

While many bed and breakfasts maintain a small and quaint atmosphere, some cater to a modern crowd. Certain accommodations feature suites that come standard with in-room hot tubs, Internet and other amenities you might find at some of the nicer hotels. Generally, these types of places are more suited to couples looking for privacy, as opposed to older couples who tend to enjoy meeting new people while playing games at night or eating breakfast in the morning.

Ask lots of questions

When you ask someone if they enjoyed their stay at a bed and breakfast, you are liable to get all sorts of different answers. Some will rave about the experience, noting the delicious food and relaxing, friendly atmosphere. On the other hand, some people end up feeling disappointed, because they imagined their stay at a bed and breakfast would be akin to a stay at a modern hotel or resort. Generally, negative feelings tend to come when people fail to research an accommodation before they make a reservation.

Bed and breakfasts aren't chains run by big corporations. More often than not, they are small business started by older couples who enjoy getting to know travelers in an intimate setting. That said, many places do cater to people who want the appropriate blend of privacy, modern amenities and a polite, homey atmosphere. In the end, it pays to research the accommodation either by phone or online. This will help ensure that you enjoy your stay without suffering any disappointments.
