Angular Cheilitis or Perleche is an inflammation of the skin and is a problem that is fairly common anywhere.
Although it is not a deadly disease, it can bring real discomfort and pain.
Even worse, having sores in your lips, mouth and face area can be very humiliating and may disrupt your social life.
Some people are more prone to having Cheilitis than others.
Some may get Cheilitis at few times a year while others may suffer from mouth sores more frequently.
The causes can also differ from one person to another.
For instance, Perleche may be caused by fungal bacteria known as Candida.
This type of bacteria thrives in a moist environment.
If the corners of your mouth are usually damp with saliva, that is where the inflammation can start.
Do you wear dentures? If yes, then you should know that ill-fitting dentures can also cause Cheilitis.
Vitamin deficiency is another culprit, particularly the lack of Vitamin B-2 (riboflavin), vitamin B-3 (niacin), vitamin B-6 (pyridoxine), or vitamin B-12 (cyanocobalamin), as well as the lack of Iron in the body may bring about Angular Cheilitis and other skin infections.
People who have a weaker Immune System are also at a greater risk, especially those with diabetes and HIV.
What happens when a person gets Cheilitis? At first, the skin will crack and later on, fissures or sores will appear.
If left untreated, the ulcerations can even become swollen and break out down to the chin.
For some people, the wounds are so unsightly that they cannot even bear to get out and meet friends, classmates, workmates or other people.
Eating, drinking and talking can prove to be very painful when you have Cheilitis.
Is there a simple cure for Angular Cheilitis or Perleche? It is a relief to know that treatment is easily within reach.
Over-the-counter creams and ointments can be bought from a drugstore to kill the fungi and bacteria in the affected area.
However these are hardly long-term solutions.
Taking in Vitamin B and Iron is another essential step especially if you are vulnerable to acquiring Perleche frequently.
