How to Read the U.S. Population Census
- 1). Go to the 2010 United States Census website home page. Census data from 1910 through 2010 can be viewed from this website.
- 2). Click on the "data" tap to access census results. Results are presented by the entire United States and also by each individual state. The total population and percentage of increase or decrease can be viewed on the "population change" tab. The "population density" tab will show you the average number of people per square mile. The "apportionment" tab will show you allocation of House of Representatives seats per state and change in number based on the current census. In each of these tabs, you can hover your cursor on any state to see the data for this state only.
- 3). Click on any individual state located on the United States map on the data page to see data specific for each state. In this view you will be able to see the total population and percent of change since the last census count per state, the population divided into race categories and the population per county.
