Benefits of a 3G Kindle
- While both Kindle Wi-Fi and Kindle 3G models can download books from Amazon in about a minute over a Wi-Fi network, the 3G model adds the ability to download books over a cellular network when there is not a Wi-Fi network available. All of the charges for cellular network access are paid for by Amazon. On the down side, the cellular system decreases battery life from three weeks to 10 days, according to Amazon. The 3G model is also two-tenths of an ounce heavier than the Wi-Fi only model. The Kindle 3G is available in either white or black. All other Kindles are only available in black.
- The Kindle DX is a larger screen version of the Kindle 3G. The larger screen reduces battery life to seven days and more than doubles the weight to almost nineteen ounces. The Kindle DX does not have the ability to connect to a Wi-Fi network at all, but again the cellular access fees are paid by Amazon.
- The price of a Kindle 3G is $189, but customers in the United States can get the price reduced to $164 if they agree to accept special offers, or coupons, from Amazon. These special offers are advertisements that appear in place of the Kindle screen saver and at the bottom of the home screen. According to Amazon they do not interrupt the reading experience.
- The Kindle 3G is the third generation of Kindle devices. Compared to the second generation, the Kindle 3G is physically smaller and lighter, though it has double the storage. The third generation devices also have a built-in web browser and a better display.
