Hunger Games - A Twisted, Exciting, "Can"t Put it Down" Page-Turner For All Ages

It's no secret that I still love and crave young adult fiction.
I resent when the section is named teen fiction - such nonsense makes me feel even more ashamed than I already do for lurking the aisles of Barnes and Noble with my camera phone out, taking pictures of covers that look interesting so I can find them for cheaper on-line.
Yep, I'm a creepster.
Young adult fiction pretty much has everything you could ask for in a fun book except it is often plagued with a dearth of sex.
It's pretty much all looking longingly into the eyes of your soul mate and maybe once after months of sexual tension you get a hot makeout session..
..
only to have to wait months for the next one.
But, I digress.
I really want to tell you about the new book series that is making me remember why reading is awesome and everyone should do it.
I do not doubt that this series is going to explode like twilight did in about a year (once someone gives it a movie deal).
Hunger Games takes place in a futuristic, post-apocalyptic world ruled by a twisted government trying to keep all its territories in check.
As punishment for a failed rebellion 74 years ago, every year the Capitol makes each of the twelve territories send one boy and one girl between ages 12 and 18 to an arena to fight to the death until only one person remains.
Our heroine, Katniss, is accompanied by the baker's son, Peeta (get it?), to represent district 12 in this year's Hunger Games.
I literally read this book, and it's sequel that came out last week, straight through, barely stopping for food and bathroom breaks.
I resented going to work and wished I had the balls to call in sick so I could keep reading it.
Each chapter ends making you NEED to know what is going to happen next.
The story is set in such a twisted new world, making it an exciting read.
For me, it was also a refreshing break from vampire books.
I still love the undead to death (see what I did there?), but it was great seeing a young adult author go out on a limb, do something different, and hit a home run.
And for those who need a good love triangle, it has that too, but it is not the focus.
Since it is young adult, don't expect to be blown away by the writing.
The book tells a great story and the writing doesn't distract from that, but it's nothing special.
