Interesting places of North Sikkim
Kabi Lungchok
Located at 17 kms from Gangtok on the North Sikkim Highway, this is a historical place. The historic treaty of blood brotherhood was signed ritually between the Lepcha Chief Te-Kung-Tek and the Bhutia Chief Khey-Bum-Sa at this place. The spot of the ceremony lies amidst the dense forest and is marked by a memorial stone pillar.
Phodong Monastery
This is a major monastery of Sikkim, located some 38 Kms from Gangtok. A recently renovated Labrang Monastery, unique for its architectural design, is also located 4 Kms beyond Phodong monastery.
Yumthang
Yumthang of the North Sikkim, is truly a paradise for nature lovers with a large variety of Rhododendrons and other alpine flowers. Located at an elevation of 11,800 ft, it has a fascinating blend of flora and fauna with breathtaking scenic grandeur. Yumthang Tsa-Chu (hot spring) located on the left bank of Lachung Chu river is immensely popular for its curative and healing properties. Lachung
This picturesque village of north district is spread out on either side of Lachung Chu river. This village still retains its original culture and tradition. The Lachung Monastery is located on the slope opposite to the highway and is the centre for all religious functions of the villagers. A glimpse of the religious functions organised on auspicious occasions in this Monastery could be a very novel experience for the tourists. The village lies on the way to Yumthang Valley from Gangtok. Yumthang is 25 kms from here.
Thangu
It is 34 kms from the state capital and its location is close to the Indo China Border. Altitude of this place is 12400 ft and this is an alpine zone which remains snowbound from December to April. The Tsomgo Lake located here is considered holy and supreme of all lakes in Sikkim which attracts 99% of tourists visiting Gangtok. This remains frozen from January to April.
Lachen
This village is at about 6 hours drive from Gangtok and is situated at an altitude of 2750 m. Here one can visit the Lachen Monastery which is located on a top of the village and commands a panoramic view of the surrounding hills and countryside. For accommodation, there are hotels and lodges.
Gurudongmar Lake
Gurudongmar Lake is a sacred lake of Sikkim. The lake is milky in colour and a part of it never freezes which is believed to be touched by Guru Padmasambhava when he passed through this area.
