How to Glaze Oak Flat-Panel Cabinets

    • 1). Remove all knobs with a screwdriver and tape over the hinges with masking tape. Spread newspapers around the bottom of the cabinet.

    • 2). Dull the existing surface of the cabinet with sandpaper, by hand, just taking off the shine. Wipe off the dust with a tackcloth.

    • 3). Brush glaze over each flat surface, laying it on thickly. Let it sit for approximately five minutes, until the shine is starting to get dull, indicating it's starting to dry.

    • 4). Wipe off the glaze with rags, pressing them lightly, so some of the glaze is left there. If there are contours or crevices to the surface, let the glaze stay gathered in them. Work the surface until it has the look you want. Let the glaze set for 10 to 12 hours.

    • 5). Spray polyurethane gloss lightly over the whole surface. Let it dry for four to six hours. Spray on a second coat. Let it dry. Add a third coat if desired. Let the final coat set overnight before reinstalling the knobs.
